Good evening,
I have an older MTH PS2 diesel with 3 volt boards. I must do a conventional reset to restore lighted marker lights and number plates, etc to operation. Once the loco is powered off, and then operated after a period of inactivity, I must do another reset to turn all lights on. This is every time the engine is powered up.
Would the battery need to be changed in this engine?

Start up the loco. As it sits there making correct noise, cut power to the track. If noise runs 6 seconds, battery ok. If not, replace. How old is battery? If over, say, 5 years, replace.
I am unsure how you are turning the engine off. With track power still on start the shutdown sequence and then power off the track after the engine lights/ sound have terminated. That should get around the battery issue if you are just powering down the track to turn off the engine.
