Over the weekend I picked up a 2055 at (I think) a reasonable price. There's no pickup roller on the tender so I wasn't surprised that there isn't a whistle inside it. The engine rollers are badly pitted and while the engine runs there is a stream of sparks from the rollers. Running is jerky and sometimes the engine needs a finger push to get it started. I'm sure that when I get it opened I'll find it needs a VERY good cleaning.

My major reason for buying this engine is that I really want a Royal Hudson. I hope that with little more than a repaint this would make a reasonable platform for conversion. Am I underestimating the work required?

Thanks for your comments,

It's gonna take a LOT of bodywork to represent a Royal Hudson with a 2055.  The domes have to go, the cab needs changing, the smokebox front needs to be streamlined and skirting added.

Might be better off searching for an MTH RailKing Royal Hudson.  I think they did 2 or 3 releases over the years.

Or, when all else fails, just repaint it CPR like I did with an MPC Chicago & Alton Hudson way back when the Earth was cooling...

Don't know what you call "reasonably priced", but I have seen a new Weaver brass

CP "Royal Hudson" go for under $400.00, on The Bay, recently. Sound, I believe; no command.

The MTH RK versions - nice but not a brass scale loco - typically go for that.

I realize that curves may be an issue (054 for the Weaver, maybe?) and that you

aren't looking for cherry, NIB, but a nice, -accurate-  loco that you only have to lube and run can be worth the "savings" of a fixer/approximation.

The RK are plenty accurate, all things considered.
