The little kids are the best part of running trains at the shows. Their eyes light up big time when they find our layout. I was running my brand new Legacy SD80 a couple shows ago (literally minutes after i bought it), and a kid spotted my Williams 773 hudson sitting in the yard and begged me to run it. I switched engines and he followed it around the layout about a dozen times with a big smile on his face. That was with most, if not all of our modules at the time so it was big. I still like steam a little better than diesel, so I can understand why he wanted to see the hudson running.

I guess I get a kick out of it because, not too many years ago, thats what I was like Smile.

You can see some kids watching trains on the layout in this video, especially about 3 minutes into it.

You didn't just let him run his train for a few minutes, but for an hour. That's very generous. Way to go.

Jake- That was also a very nice thing you did for that little boy & let him see your Williams 773 Hudson run on the layout. I think your parents should be very proud of you. You are a first class young man, that is for sure & an Eagle Scout to boot. Smile Take Care.
Gilly, your story touched my heart and, from reading all the replies, touched many others. This surely made this kid's day. Your kindness towards this little engineer is what makes this hobby so great! Thankyou for sharing this story with us.

Oh, and Jake, hats off to you too! Seeing smiles on these kids faces is what its all about. Thanks

Wish I could say that, but I haven't made it yet. Still have two merit badges to finish and my project to figure out (I have less than a year now, I've got to get to work very soon if I want any chance of getting there)

That also reminds me of my trip to the Strasburg RR back in April. There was a little kid and his dad in our car (we were in the Presidents car, there were only four(?) families there). I was taking video in the back of the car, the kid's dad was sleeping in the front of the car (they'd been there before) and the kid was explaining everything to me as we went along Big Grin. He was just like me when I was his age so it was funny.

Hi Jake!

With your character, I have no doubt that you'll be an Eagle Scout someday. I admire what Gilly & you did. Both of you made a little child happy Thanks Smile
It does not get any better than this & the cream sure does rise to the top. That is also a very nice story you told about the kid at Strasburg who was talking about trains. I would have loved to hear what he told you. I'm sure it was priceless. Take Care. Smile
