My wife was from Ashland, VA.  The original railroad was the RF&P mail line.  Everybody must be use to the rail road nose. I never heard anyone complaining about the rail nose.  I have never heard a train horn or bell I believe the engineer are told not the make any excessive noise.   Yes the train does run the full length of the town about 5 miles of so.

High speed rail is a big controversy in Ashland right now.......3 opinions are being debated:

1. No high speed rail.

2. Upgrade the tracks through town.

3. Build a high speed bypass to the west of downtown.

I don't know which one will win out......but it would be nice to upgrade the Richmond to DC part of the trip north.

The first house I bought was less than a 100 yds from that busy RF&P line.  A crossing was also close. They always used their horns at that crossing.

It would be a shame to move the trains out of town, since the railroad originally started the town by building a resort to attract people out of Richmond to ride their trains.
