At Lowes earlier today, and over heard 2 CSX Employees talking about the up and coming acquisition...Both hoping they wouldn't have to move, and all that goes along with that.

I questioned one of the gentlemen, and he said that rumors have been flying for a long time, and just hoped that they would keep the Russell Yard Operation in tact..

I told him I wouldn't think they any company would take on something of that magnitude,  and shut it down....I told him of my working for Ashland Oil, and Marathon Oil taking us over, and it wound up being the best thing that ever happened, more jobs, more workers and less bean counters...Job Security out the Yang.......!

I was a Trainmaster and then Track Supervisor for NS, and as many meetings and events I attended, not one time did I hear NS was even in a position to purchase CSX. As noted above, I am sure the government would block a sale or "merger". Just seems a little hard to believe since many of the lines compete with each other. CSX is not really hurting, neither is NS. Stock holders and Board Members lie through their teeth to try to squeeze out another penny.

Hey Hokie, I thought the same thing, but I thought their conversation was unique, as Like both of you guys, I hadn't heard that one, and our Club President has a son who is a Conductor on the James River Run between Clifton Forge and Richmond Va. I was with him at a club meeting last night, and he didn't mention anything about it, and always tells something about what his kid is doing on the CSX...... Very Proud Papa

This could have been a  BS story that was concocted for these 2 at the work place.....Seen/heard this done before.....With as many jobs that CSX has lost at the Russell Yard Complex, and can see something like this happening.......Not Fair, but does happen............Fact!

I would say any rumor concerning a merger of NS and CSX is pure BS.  As a chemical shipper; I can assure you so much crap would be raised with the STB by shippers this would be dead on arrival.

Besides; NS is experiencing their own service meltdown right now and has bigger fish to fry dealing with that than wasting time on a merger proposal that would go nowhere.

Sounds like the making of a 21st century Penn Central.  If there were going to be any merger scenario it would have to preserve competition.  A CSX / NS merger wouldn't do that.  The more likely merger partners for CSX would either be BNSF or UP.  Even those scenarios have conflicts with anti-trust issues.  While it has long been rumored the end game would leave the US with perhaps 2 to 3 class ones, it doesn't seem likely for some time to come.

Just to add a little perspective, for the last 32 years I have worked for a moderate sized family owned business.  At least once a year for the last 25 years a rumor circulates that we are either for sale or have been sold.  I've heard it from competitors, customers, vendors and employees.   We're all still here, working for the same people....

“appearantly, lots of railroad business experts, regulators, chairmen etc... on here. clueless, lol.”

Clueless huh?  Have you been talking to my wife?  🙄

Dominic:  In NS’ immediate instance; their meltdown is the result of service design changes that took place here in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama over the past 12 months starting with closure of the hump up in Chattanooga.  They then started tinkering with internal routings, blocking patterns and frequencies, origination and destination points for trains.

CSX’s well publicized service issues last year also caused back ups on NS as CSX delayed accepting interchange traffic, particularly here in Atlanta.  Overlay rapid traffic volume growth and an insufficient number of T&E crews and both the Georgia and Alabama Divisions began to plug up.  So far most of the issue has been restricted to Alabama and Georgia but, we’ve recently seen signs that Buckeye Yard in Columbus, OH might also be experiencing some issues.

NS in the past two weeks has moved 75 T&E crews from other divisions into Georgia and Alabama and begun to reuse an alternate route from Birmingham to Macon they had downgraded last year as part of the service design changes.

I have complete confidence NS will dig out of this but, the pain for shippers is real and likely won’t go away quickly enough.

Why would Norfolk Southern want CSX?

Maybe eliminating the comp, and making their base larger....?

When Mergers are done there is always a reason....The 1st one I was involved in with my old company, I questioned the He** out of it, and the second one, I just sat back and watched........Then 3 years later they offered a Grandiose buy out.....Then if you can, take the Money and Run.....!

Exactly the reason that the Surface Transportation Board would NOT allow such a "merger"!

OK, I just returned from our local Menard's store. First off, they said anybody that shops at Lowes instead of Menard's, has no clue what would be going on at NS nor CSX. Second, Menard's will be purchasing the O Scale line from Atlas O, so there would be no more reason to shop at either Lowes nor Home Depot!

Curt,   Do you have any knowledge if NS will keep the Columbus (GA) line in service for through traffic (always had locals)...and if they will cut any other routes?  I find it odd on the newest NS map that the Princeton Deepwater district is complete gone from the map...yet the entire WV Secondary shows as NS.   All of which is technically redundant with the NW Main as a a through route.

Curt I think the Deep Water, Wva sector is now serviced by a new or almost new Kanawha River Railroad/Terminal. I see their engines/trains in downtown Nitro, Wva, and they cross the Ohio, and on to Columbus, Ohio....Going back east, and crossing the Kanawha at Deep Water to Princeton, Wv...Before the NS/N&W/PennCentral, it was the NYC. We have a club members who has some pictures, of a "5300" series NYC Hudson at the coal shut in downtown Nitro Wva, in the mid to late 50's.........Just Sayin !

I live in mt airy md, I have a csx main line by my house I take my son too a lot. Lately I've seen a lot of Norfolk southern running with csx. Couple years ago this wasn' happening? It' jyst weird all of sudden, I mean I've seen a couple bnsf and up run a couple times in 20 years but the Norfolk southern runs with csx practically every time I go
