This was part of the old CNJ Elizabethport Shops facility in Elizabeth NJ.
I assume the long, narrow rectangle behind the roundhouse .... with the tracks running to four different buildings ... is a transfer table. I was surprised by its size.
Were/are transfer tables typically this large? Even when in addition to a large (it is large, right?) turntable/roundhouse?

Here's an image of the SAL shops in Portsmouth VA:
The TT was only 68' and hand-operated according to Prince's book. The coach shop was built in 1916 and had 15 tracks according to the book.
I don't know how they turned their larger steam engines, a 1958 diagram shows a Wye off to the right, but that was after steam disappeared on SAL. I can only imagine the Wye was there back then too.
I don't know what the typical size might be. But there is a fairly long one at the Montana Rail Link (nee-NP) shops in Livingston, Montana. It might be worth a look on google maps.
I believe the Livingston shops were the main heavy shops for the NP, so that may explain why the table was so large?
