Hi all.  I want to have a farm scene on the layout I am planning.  I am thinking of using lots of Plasticville buildings and was wondering how the Ertl Farm County sets compare size wise and scale wise to Plasticville?  I know they are smaller, more S scale, but was just wondering if anyone has these on a layout and how they looked.  If the Ertl barns are about the same size as the Plastiville barns that would be great as they have a lot more accessories with them.  Anyone have any pics?  I have included an example of what I am looking at.  Thanks and happy railroading.  Curtis

I bought this set by mistake.  it is 1/64 scale.  it was definitely too small for my standard gauge layout.   I ended up using an Ohio Art tinplate barn from the 1950's, it worked well - about 1/32 scale.     But for O gauge, if you want a smaller-sized barn this one might work.   the one i have is still in the box, i'd be happy to pass it along 1/2 price if you decide it's what you want.

1 64 scale but they look good in the background. I have had a set in an odd corner small area when entering the layout room at kid height so the kids can play with it and they do! Had it many years and added a few extra farm tractors etc. and animals kids have fun playing with it. setting up fences moving animals and moving feed to them. taking cows to barn or milking pens outside of barn so they can get at them. Gets lots of play value with the kids.

An Ertl Farm set, my brother Bob's boy. The Silo actually has farm sounds. Corn crib was an additional Ertl piece Most of the farm machinery is Ertl 1/43. Note that the machine shed has a foundation added for more height.  My wife did most of the painting.  The Chicken coop in the front is K-line.  Link  to additional pictures on my website. Best viewed as a slideshow.

I haven't been able to find the red barn anymore, the one posted by Curtis is the only one I can find. Look at TSC or any local farm tractor dealer. Seems all the tractor dealers have a toy dept. Don't forget your heavy equipment dealer(CAT.. Case..JD....) all sell models. The house is an MTH, the blue silo is rare Ertl. Plasticville made the greenhouse and veggie stand(new production).Tree house by K Line.

The attached three photos are of the farm scene on my home layout. The barn is a laser wood kit from Mountaineer Products in Florence, KY (their website is currently down); cows are Woodland Scenics, figures are WS and Artistta, blue Kent's Dairy pickup truck is a Matchbox classics from a few years ago, other vehicles are from Diecast Direct, produce stand is Plasticville.

Judging by your other scratch-built stuff, we can't wait to see the final product! Here's a shot of a scratch built version in front of our real-life barn:
