People can grind on and on about long distance trains in the US. It isn't going to happen. We don't have the density of Europe/Japan nor the communist government of China to make it happen. The environmental studies alone just to put track from NY to LA would be in the billions, this before a single rock was moved.
Some places may need a "way out". Greyhound or megabus may be the better option.
Automobile ownership is too high for residents of the USA to be attracted back into long distance passenger trains.
