The New York Central was a Hill Line like the Burlington, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, so it makes no sense that a merger with other railroads took place.

What are you talking about?  The New York Central had nothing to do with the Hill lines.  It was owned by the Vanderbilt's for many years.

Then why was it called the New York Central SYSTEM?  P&LE was part of the "SYSTEM"?
