Could be a 66 or there abouts, Pontiac LeMans, or GTO. Switcher SW9?? Long side handrails maybe 1200.
That photo's enjoying a second life. It's almost as old as a Henny Youngman joke. I remember seeing that picture in Trains magazine many, many, many, many years ago.

I just thought it was cool I for some reason think I remember seeing it back when I was a kid of about 10 or 11 ( yes telling my age ) It seems to me GM used it to promote the car that year.
A couple of scenarios: Hotrod driver missed the turn at the bridge, took out the
guard rail and dropped onto the tracks below...or open car carrier lost its top load
closest to the backing engine when engine came to a sudden stop.
This picture showed up on Facebook awhile back. I believe it fell off an open car carrier as coloradohirailer said. I can't remember if it was due to not being tied down when the car was moved, or if it was a car that got away and bumped into the locomotive.
Okay went back and reread the email and here what was at the bottom I missed as liked the pic so much lol anyway here is the story a couple of you where right
"Missouri Pacific
Interesting accident in San Antonio, 1967.
Quote from the San Antonio Light, Thursday April 6, 1967:
Possibly the latest in locomotive hood ornaments is a new Pontiac GTO. At the Missouri Pacific yards, Medina and W. Commerce, this mishap occurred when the switch engine came in contact with an open-type freight car carrying autos. The top-level row of autos had been readied for unloading when it rolled onto the switch engine. The unloading device, which can be adjusted to various levels on the freight car, simplified the chore of getting the undamaged auto off its perch."
That's a funny hood ornament. Most of the time, a hood ornament for a diesel is the car of some idiot that went around the gates.
That's definitely a "GM" hood ornament.

It makes you wonder if the car is around today. Now that would be provenance!
"Yeah, this is the GTO that was a locomotive hood ornament back in '67".........
I was just going to say I would take that hood ornament today in a heart beat
I'm not a car guy, but that is a sweet car!
Undamaged? Hard to believe.....
