While I was on my Southern California birthday excursion, my family and I took a drive out to Gaviota State Beach. It is about 30 miles north of Santa Barbara along Highway 101. I went there to see the venerable trestle that crosses that entire beach. This long and high trestle has been there for over 100 years and has survived earthquakes and other disasters. Many railfans have made the trip to photograph trains going across it. I've wanted to see it ever since I saw a photo of the SP Daylight crossing it. It is still used by the Coast Starlight and some Surfliners. It was a pilgrimage for me. Although no trains crossed while I was there it was still wonderful to see it and snap some photos of it. Here are some more pics of it and the surrounding beach. Unfortunately, as we were leaving, I found out that there was a little one-lane road that goes up the the trestle! I could've gotten some track level shots. Oh well. Enjoy!
BTW: HOT WATER, did you ever cross it in the 4449?
