I have a large family (2 sisters, 2 brothers, 2 parents).  We all celebrate Christmas and like to exchange gifts.  I don't like Christmas wish lists...in fact, I despise them.  If you know me, love me, and spend time with me, you know what would make me happy.  And vice versa!  So, I'm sure I'll be getting train-related gifts this year.  How do you carefully hint at what you would like so you don't end up with a bunch of rolling stock that doesn't really fit your vision?  I've been using Pinterest for specific things.  What about those non-specific things such as: "anything Bethlehem Steel", or "no boxcars commemorating specific events that I was not a part of (i.e. TCA 2004)"

I make a list! I include the dealer's name, phone number, website, train or part number(she got me a bunch of parts from Jeff Kane a couple of years ago). I do the same when I'm asking for parts for my road runner. Much better chance to get what I want/need that way, and she doesn't have to worry about getting the wrong item. Have never had to exchange anything.

It is not easy for loved ones, unless they participate with you side by side with your model railroad activities, to know EXACTLY what you want. Giving broad hints to them produces broad results, in other words, gifts that need to be returned.

I see no issue with being very specific about what you want. A good description of what it is and where is the best place to buy it is the best way to go.
