ASHLEY, IND. — A father-son duo located in northeast Indiana whose unconventional approach to preserving operational steam locomotives will be featured in a pilot program for the TLC cable television network.
The show will be called “John and Barney: Have Engine, Will Travel,” referring to their well-traveled 0-4-0T, Flagg Coal Co., No. 75. John and Barney Gramling have grown their preservation efforts to two operating engines and expanded their vision about sharing their passion with others interested in steam locomotives.
TLC will begin filming the pilot next month and will document the father and son as they pursue their passion of rebuilding and traveling with their steam locomotives. The two locomotives will travel extensively this year and can be found at the following locations.
■Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, Calera, Ala.
■North Carolina Transportation Museum, Spencer, N.C.
■Whitewater Valley Railroad, Connersville and Metamora, Ind.
■Railroad Museum of New England, Thomaston, Conn.
■Walkersville Southern, near Frederick, Md.
■Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad, Pa.
■South Carolina Railroad Museum, Winnsboro, S.C.
The Gramlings bought No. 75 in 1991, and it began its travels in 2004. Their second locomotive, 0-6-0T No. 126, debuted last year.
