'Road testing' 3 recently acquired engines.

Western Maryland 2-8-0 imported by BLI in 2022.

Impressive that a 2-8-0 can pull 21 cars up a 0.5% grade.

GN C-1 0-8-0.

Added some canopy glue to the insulated side of the drivers for the Seattle's yard switcher.

It used to be able to pull 43 cars but, with the addition of vintage metal Athearn/Varney and wood Silver Streak/Ambroid cars, more 'pulling power' is needed!

I envy PRR railroaders; they have more color pictures of just one class of engine than all of the GN steam pictures!

I wasn't expecting to buy anything but so much for that 'theory'!

Lebanon, Indiana train show 2023 40

4 sets of Central Valley heavy weight passenger trucks.

They made very nice trucks: fully sprung and functional side frames.

For my brass passenger cars, if I every get 'around' to painting them!

Lebanon, Indiana train show 2023 41

Tons of steam brass parts.

Lebanon, Indiana train show 2023 42

Overland's motor/drive system for steam engines.

Lebanon, Indiana train show 2023 43

I bought a bunch of brass steam parts and Leon said: I'll never sell the rest of these so just take them all.

He 'talked me into it'!

Some 'loads' for my ore cars.

Lebanon, Indiana train show 2023 45

Never have too much 1/16" diameter heat shrink tubing!

I didn't need this but Leon had a very reasonable price so I couldn't refuse!

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 LED and decoder install.

Video: 'yard test'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP7k-I0XcRA

The LED's were installed and glued in place yesterday.

TCS 1517 decoder installed in tender and building an 8-pin connector.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 17

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 18

This tender had no headlight or marker lights.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 19

Rectangular hole made for the 8-pin connector.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 20

Drilled/tapped a 2/56 screw hole to attach the red wire to the frame.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 21

Frame wires soldered.  The other 4 wires get a 4-pin connector to operate via functions the headlight/cab light, marker lights, running board lights and the fire box glow LED operates independently from the decoder.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 22

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 30

Headlight and marker LED's routed via heat shrink tubing with 5 short pieces for future PM.

I forgot to take pictures of the remaining LED installation.

Will have to see if I can remove the 'ghost' on the decals from the previous person who painted this engine.

I used Scalecoat 'loco black' which dries 'dull' to 'touch up' several 'paint chips' on the model.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 36

Used the nearest draw bar hole so 'near scale' distance from cab to tender.

Painted with TCS 1517 decoder and the usual array of lights.

Burlington M-4A 2-10-4 45

Painted but not converted to DCC.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 imported by PFM (United) in 1976 and GN S-1 4-8-4 decoder and LED prep.

=============

Southern PS4 4-6-2:

Almost final assembly!

Heat shrink tubing for the head light and marker lights.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 31

Usual extra 'wire' for future PM.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 32

LED's for headlight, running board lights and cab light soldered to a 4-pin connector.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 33

Seats added.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 34

Had to move the motor to cut some excess motor mount to route the wires past the new back head and leave the new caulk on the motor 'cook' before final assembly.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 35

===============

GN S-1 4-8-4 imported by Tenshodo in the 70's.

TCS 1517 decoder, new can motor and LED's install.

I have at least one of all my GN classes converted to DCC but 'missed this one'!

I added the 'glacier paint'.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 01

This engine has the functional 'power reverse' where the mechanism moves 'up and down' for forward and reverse.

One has to be close to the engine to see the 'movement'.

The old PFM contact is mounted on the driver retaining plate.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 05

A collar on one drive supplies the 'movement'.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 05A

I re-motored and put in a Sagami motor in this engine along with PFM sound many 'moons' ago.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 06

Replaced the larger can motor with a smaller can motor so the 'back head' will fit in the cab.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 07

Had to cut a 'slot' in the motor mount to route the wires past the back head.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 07A

JB weld used to secure the back head.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 08

Original rectangular hole made larger for the 8-pin connector.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 08A

Tender head light drilled and 0402 LED installed.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 09

Marker lights and head light drilled for LED's.

The old candescent bulb had to be removed.

GN S-1 4-8-4 Tenshodo WPR 10

Cab light and running board lights installed.

Southern PS4 4-6-2; final assembly.

Video: 'yard test':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfgjBU7hL3w

Wires soldered to the 'frame' side.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 36

Programming track.

No 'use' putting the boiler on the frame if I have the motor wires 'back wards'!

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 37

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 38

The back of the motor 'just' fit in front of the 'back head' with about a 1/16" to spare!

I had to 'clip' and bend the two motor 'tabs'.

The yellow tape was removed after the caulk was cured.

The 'fire box glow' LED is the only 3 MM LED; the rest are 0402's.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 39

Another engine where it was easy to route the wires 'out the back'.

Southern PS4 4-6-2 pacific 1976 40

Front view.

MMM: have to repaint those marker light wires, again, after the paint got 'scraped' off when routing them through the marker lights, etc.  Paint them black so they look like the prototype wires 'running' to the headlight.

Muncie, Indiana train show.

Miles: 103.

There were 2 large buildings; one for selling stuff and the other for layouts.

This was my 'first time' at this train show.

Building 1.

==============

Booty:

Joe got a D&RGW lantern.

Muncie, Inidana 2023 39

I got 5 freight cars.

I didn't need them but the seller did a really nice job of assembling them.

Muncie, Inidana 2023 40

Kadees and metal wheels.

He did a nice subtle weathering on the cars where you don't notice that they are weathered, which I'm partial to.

I have very few Accurail cars.  I like the 'wood grain' and single sheathed cars.
