Layout visit to Keith's house and to diagnose a 'problem'.

Keith Corman's layout 01

Joe and I went to Keith's house to diagnose 'no power' to a 'district'.

One 'booster' had 'off line' on the far right toggle (red light on).

'Flipped' the toggle several times and the 'off line' red light 'went off'.

Toggle must be defective but 'if left alone' should be OK.

I like 'quick fixes'!

Layout PM:

Had to reverse two passenger train sets via the mainline.

Videos:

N&W A 2-6-6-4 passenger train.

Started with the N&W J 4-8-4 but the 'traction tire' came off so the A was 'substituted'.

GN R-2 2-8-8-2.

At the last 'session' this engine started to 'stop' several times.

Initially, that's a sign that the decoder may be 'overloading' but found that the tender is loosing conductivity.

Soldered a wire from the superstructure to the frame but nada.

Cleaned up the surfaces between the frame and trucks has removed most of the problem.

May need to add some 'lead' to the tender.

GNRW layout 2023 34

GNRW layout 2023 35

N&W J 4-8-4's 'traction' tire came off the driver plus added some 'canopy' glue to the insulated side drivers.

GNRW layout 2023 36

I fixed this turnout 2 'sessions' ago but I had to re-solder the linkage.  This 'time' I used 'water pipe' solder instead of 'electrical' solder and a larger 'glob' adhered to the linkage.

GNRW layout 2023 37

N&W A 2-6-6-4 west of Waverly.

GNRW layout 2023 38

This 'flat' fell down and blocked the train from moving which I thought, initially, that the 'drive mechanism' on the engine was loose.

GNRW layout 2023 39

The B&O diesel derailed under the steps....

GNRW layout 2023 40

This screw was between the rails and the BLI diesels have a low 'clearance' where the 'gears' are located.

GNRW layout 2023 41

B&O train at Chumstick canyon trestle.

GNRW layout 2023 42

With the latest 'updates' the dispatcher's panel seems to be more reliable and not needing to be 're-booted'.

GNRW layout 2023 43

Two passenger trains needed 'reversing'.

Bought 2 more pictures that my 15 year old grand daughter painted.
At only 100 bucks each, I think I got the better deal!

This one I got last year that she had displayed in the Cincinnati's Art museum for very young artists.

My daughter made this one.

NYC 4-6-4 Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson.

Testing engine on my minimum 48" curve with lower front skirting 'in place'.

The wheels are really close to the skirting on 48" radius but it did negotiate the curve.

NYC 4-6-4 Hudson Commodore Vanderbilt 2023 21

To be 'safe':

1) I used canopy glue to secure the skirting as there are only two small round tubes that go into the 2 holes in the boiler plus they will be easy to remove with the canopy glue.

2) I filed the inside of each skirt to give the wheels some extra 'room'.

NYC 4-6-4 Hudson Commodore Vanderbilt 2023 22

A 'rounded' file was used.

All moving surfaces, also, got lubricated.

A 'very fast' decoder install and Ross club meeting.

GN O-1 2-8-2 imported by Sunset in 1978.

Acquired this engine about a year ago.

It had a Lenz LDE33 decoder.

When inputting the data into the decoder via Decoderpro the engine would do the usual 'short jerking'

indicating that the data was uploaded to the decoder but the engine would never move via the throttle.

When making the 'selection' of a Lenz decoder the LDE33 was not listed so I choose one that seemed reasonably 'close'.

The decoder was mounted in the boiler so I did the same with the replacement TCS KAM4 decoder.

Only 4 wires were needed to install the decoder.

I believe this is the only steam engine that I haven't installed sound and all the LED's.

GN O-1 2-8-2 CP Sunset 22

Whoever painted this engine did an excellent job and I didn't want to 'butcher it'

so I only installed the basic 'no sound' decoder.

I didn't want to drill holes into the tender base.

GN O-1 2-8-2 CP Sunset 23

Nor into the front of the tender.

GN O-1 2-8-2 CP Sunset 24

Also, no lights were installed.

I believe this 3" 'spiking' has kept the rail from getting 'out of gauge' over the last 44 years as there are few derailments on the 1500' of track with the mainline being 400' long.  The contraction and expansion of the rail can occur between every 3" (which would be 'minimal') of spiked rail so the total expansion is not at the end of the rail if every tie was 'spiked'.  This was not a 'planned' result; it was, simply, me not wanting to spike every rail!

The number 10 turnouts also 'helps'.

New delivery:

Saturn rocket and launch pad from Menards.

Ordered mine on April 26 when I got the 'email' and took 7 days for arrival at my local Manard's store.

They have an O gauge and an HO gauge version.

I purchased the HO version.

The 'full size' rocket is about 363' so, in reality, both of these models are way to small, but still cool.

Figuring about 8' per inch for HO, the model would be about 45" tall!

Comes in a sturdy 'mailing' box which will be saved.

Atlas rocket, Menards 01

Also, the rocket is contained in a sturdy plastic container.

Only instructions that I found were labels on the plastic container.

Atlas rocket, Menards 02

The top and bottom comes with 3 staples on each side (total 12 staples) that needed to be removed.

I used a small flat screw driver to open the 'back' of each staple and, then, partially pulled them out on the other side and then used needle nose pliers to remove all the staples.

Open just the base and not the top as one can't remove the rocket from the top of the container.

Atlas rocket, Menards 03

There is a plastic 'bubble' on each side of the base that holds the base 'in place': why one can't remove it from the 'top'.

Atlas rocket, Menards 04

A separate plug for routing the 'wires' from under the layout.

Atlas rocket, Menards 05

I used distilled water.

Atlas rocket, Menards 06

I used a small funnel to pore H2O into the small base that the rocket is sitting 'on'.

Vapor comes out of that base; camera doesn't show it 'well'.

Atlas rocket, Menards 08

I have no room on the main part of the layout so it is in the laundry room where my 3 track interchange/return loop is located.  I have two other Menard's buildings at that location.

This one bring back memories of when I was 'young'.

Atlas rocket, Menards 09

And this one because it is a very nice scale model building.

Test run a local railroader's steam engines.

He purchased them at our local Division 7's train show.

PRR K-4 ran well imported by Westside models.

Alan's PRR layout 14

PRR 4-8-2 had smoke coming from the motor at the brushes.

He'll use a can motor (left in picture) to replace the 'open frame' motor.

Alan's PRR layout 15

No box for this 2-6-6-2 but, after some research, we decided it was a Nickel Plate 2-6-6-2 engine and has one air pump on the front of the fire box.

It doesn't 'fit' my layout either; that's why it's in the staging yard.

I went to high school and college in the 60's so seeing the moon mission in 1968 was memorable.

Which state were these people born in?

1. first person to step on the moon

2. first US astronaut to circle the earth.

3. He invented the light bulb.

4. first to fly.

5. female sharp shooter.

Some PM and Ross meeting Tuesday night meeting.

PM.

PRR GG-1.

I bought 2 of these engines from Bachmann (the only 2 Bachmann engines that I possess)

as there were about 90 bucks each with DCC so a 'no brainer'.

I use them to test the layout before any railroaders arrive as they cover the mainline very quickly.

They have never 'sounded' like electrics but would put out weird noises.

I decided to put them on the programming track and 'check them out'.

PRR GG-1 electric bachmann 19

I found that they had 'steam engines' as their 'description'.

I selected Bachmann in Decoderpro but it only showed 'steam and diesels' so,

I'm guessing, that's what I selected since there were no other options.

This time, I read the decoder and it came up with 'Bachmann; GG-1' so that was selected.

NOTE: one can see the old listing of the GG-1's as 'steam' (which were deleted).
