Dominic, your eyes did not deceive you.

The history of Santa Fe passenger car painting is long and complicated, but there were two series of streamlined Pullmans built in 1942 that were smooth-sided and were delivered in medium grey with a dark grey window band, similar to cars operated by SP, UP, and maybe some other roads. Around 1960, Santa Fe did away with the window stripe and used solid medium grey. The Valley series (6-6-4, I think) were very common on all trains except the Chiefs, and even made their way into some Chief consists. Some no-frills baggage cars built in the 1960's were also smooth sided and grey.

Additionally, many Santa Fe heavyweight cars were repainted 2-tone or solid grey instead of coach green, beginning with the Scout in the 1930's and increasing during the last 20 years of Santa Fe passenger service.
