I have a pair of the original K-Line scale K-4 Pacifics and a newly released Lionel Legacy K-4 Pacific. I tried pairing the two brands up in a consist, but was unsuccessful since the Lionel runs at a much higher speed than the K-Line. I don't know if this is due to a difference in the mechanicals or just the electronics.

Has anyone been successful in consisting the two different brands together, or have any ideas how it may be done? I still am using TMCC, not Legacy, so if your ideas can be used with TMCC, that would be helpful, though sooner or later I will I'm sure I will spring for a Legacy system.

I'm surprised by that, have you tried changing the speed steps to M or H on the legacy k-4. Legacy locos even operated under TMCC typically start off at signifigantly slower speeds than TMCC locos. Regardless, they probably will not "lashup" well no matter what, as they're electronics are entirely different.
To my mind, the most important part of a multiple unit locomotive is making sure the mechanics of the drive trains are identical, or at least exceptionally similar.

The fancy electronics (do I sound like a geezer, or what?) can only do so much to match the systems. If they have dissimilar motors, or gear ratios, or wheel sizes, it's not gonna work well.

A good way to tell how closely they are matched is to run them close to each other in a conventional environment.

No, wait.

That would not account for some of the conventional speed control systems out there, K-Line's house brand, MTH's PS2 when operated in conventional mode.

You can always give it a try. Some of the cruise control systems allow you to adjust one locomotive. ERR has the "exclusive nudge feature" if I recall the advertising correctly, and Lionel probably already has it as well.
On the other hand, could it just be the K-Line speed control?

This is the Lionel loco that is reputed to have its ancestry in the K-Line scale K-4, right?

That would lead one to think that the mechanisms should be similar, if not as close to identical as current manufacturing process deliver.

I wonder it the motor is the same. Is anyone willing to pop the hood and check out the differences between the Lionel and the K-Line?
No RickO, you're wrong. Diesels and Electrics MU by way of MU Hoses and Cables. Correct me if I'm wrong, But Steam still uses an engineer in each Locomotive to control the Locomotive. No MU hoses or cables on steam.

Also, he is not using Legacy. I believe he said he was using TMCC, so I would believe with no way to load the Legacy Module the K-4 would be set for TMCC and I have been able to run alot of different locos by matching the stall speed. I would also turn off speed control if they both don't have it.

Understood, I have the new k-4 and run it with the old tmcc, set at M- 100 speed steps, it basically begins to crawl from a stand still, I don't see any way possible that it would run faster than a much older TMCC equipped loco. Older TMCC locos typically start at a higher speed like say 5mph or so.
