I switched the switch controller stand from one side to the other, and a meal pin/rod dropped out from it.
No idea where this thin metal rod/pin goes.
Only mention of a pin in the manual refers to the plastic pin that inserts into a slot, which I understand.
But, there is no mention of this metal pin/rod and where it goes.
Any help would be appreciated.

If it is a 072 switch, and just a thin wire, it is a decorative throw rod that sets between the rails. It has no operational function.
I did the same thing awhile ago and was equally concerned.
It turns out that rod is merely for asthetic purposes, its the rod that is "supposed" to turn the lantern.
There is a small hole in the bottom of the base the lantern is on. There is another small hole at the base of the outside rail across from the lantern.
You can insert one end in one hole and gently bend it and get the opposite end in the other.
Geez, its so thin I never even noticed it before.

You can "flex" the little rod and get it back in without taking it all apart. I've been there as well, I had to go get another switch to figure out where it came from. 
This happened while I was working, question is does it have to go back in? It appears that the switch functions as needed without. Photo attached has two pins from two switches
No they don't have to go back in the switch, they are strictly cosmetic and serve no operational function.
