I have the beautiful weaver cp empress and I can;t get it to pull well at all.  I weighs about the same as my weaver samhongsa royal hudson but will not in any shape of form pull like it does.

Have any of you cp fans messed with this engine to get it to pull better.  Its limit for me is 3 pullman bradley cp coaches on o 72 curves and that is it.

First: Is your problem power or traction? Is it spinning the drivers or does it just not have enough oomph to pull the load? The solutions for those two problems would be very different!

If your problem is traction, here's a couple of things to try:

1. Traction tires could be loose, missing, or covered with oil.

2. Check the tension on the spring on the trailing truck, if it has a spring. On another brass engine, I found the trailing truck spring was so stiff that it was taking weight off the rear set of drivers, which have the traction tires. A new, softer spring from Ace Hardware gave the engine a lot more traction.

it spins it drivers very easy.  I had it in to weaver and they put another traction tire driver on front and no help,  they put in a plug in place of the rear springs to get the center driver off the rails as it was lifting the rear driver some, and that allowed me to pull 3 passenger cars which it is limited to now.  Weaver had no other suggestions as to how to get it to pull better.

There were issues with Balance and weight distributions. Some of it was address  by Weaver.  Most of the model weight is on the back set of drivers.  Additional weight needs to be added to the front of the model, so that all three sets of drivers have equal traction.  I sent mine back to Weaver for adjustment.

The weight distribution is on the third set of drivers under the 2816.  Please contact Weaver on this, I believe they also did some work on adjusting the sprung drivers, all three sets. I could be wrong and often.  Mike CT
