Historic Yard Shots

Its fun to try and model the look of a certain era......I model mid 60's so there are lots of steam era cars.....I like them a bit more on the weathered side though it may not be prototypical......

Hey, what are they doin? Watering the rocks? Checking for hobos? Checking for yard bulls? Awfully suspicious if you ask me! Nice aged boxcars though!

How about the switch crew members checking the hand brakes, checking for any wheel chocks/skates, checking the brake pipe angle cocks, and checking to see if the coupler knuckls are open, prior to coupling up that string of cars.

No fair using actual reality and factual situations on OGR.

The first yard photo is a Jack Delano shot from the mid-Forties. If you search shorpy.com and the railroads sub-folder you will find a number of Delano's yard shots in color, showing amazingly weathered freight rolling stock; if you model the steam era it would appear that you cannot over-weather!

Pete- yes, the Delano photos are also on the LOC website. Either it or shorpy works.

By the way, everyone- check out the filthy reefers in the photo Pete posted. A goal for all to reach with their reefer-madness collection.
