That is a train load of CWR, i.e. continuous welded rail.
Farmer Bill, great minds think alike...………..
Yep, it's rails alright. I worked as a conductor for NS some years ago. Worked on a few work trains too, laying rails, spreading balast, burying fiber optic cable, and cleaning up used RR ties.

Unloaded Montour Westland Shale Gas collection site rail service.
Rail dated 1966. Used rail
Loaded on small wheels and transported over a 2% grade to the Westland Yard site.

OK, but how do you know that that rail is from "October 1966"? The question was about a train he saw TODAY.
no idea what I am talking about but playing Sherlock Holmes here.
I blew up this section of rail. It looks to me like 1996 (or is it 1966 as I look closer?) and could the hash marks be for months? there are ten= October?

Yes, 10 lines = October of 1966.
Correct! During my 41 years of working on the rail road in the mechanical department, I spent 6 months while I was furloughed working in the track department. One of the things I learned was how to "read rail". Didn't learn much else though, it was a "labor intesive" section gang. Doug
53 years from manufacture date. I would guess this track, pictures above, was not used a lot, if it could be re-used. With all of the abandoned lines, the shrinkage of the American Rail system, IMO there would have to be a lot of used-rail. I took this picture Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Well used rail. The Great Allegheny Bike Trail shares the right-of-way.

I apologize for the diverge. I tried to get pictures of the P&LE rail train that delivered the rail, but access to the train, where it stopped, to unload, was blocked by the trees, and difficult to access from the bike trail. Part of the insanity at the time, these pictures were taken, was the rights to Westland Spur, (Old Montour Railroad), were given to the Montour (bike) Trail Group. P&LE negotiated with the Trail Group, for right-of-way access, which included the bike trail to be extended to the Westland Shale Gas facility (same/shared right-of-way). The construction workers were very nice. I found the rail construction fascinating. One of the bike rides, I used the odometer on the bike, to measure the continuous rail pieces. Each about 1/4 mile, (.2 tenths)
