I don't know if you were on the crew roster on that particular move, but I would assume you heard about it. What happened to it?!?!

I have no idea.
On the pentrex title "3985 over Cajon". Or the 1994 trip over Cajon Pass they had the same problem and there was video of Steve Lee putting out the fire towards the end of the tape. I believe it was grease catching on fire underneath the smoke box for whatever reason but it wasn't much of an issue as they kept rolling on shortly after they stopped.
There is also footage of a 4000 exiting Hermosa on the Pentrex DVD last of the Giants and you can see a small fire in roughly the same area but on the engineers side.
Oh my, I wish I had not watched this video, what great pacing shots. I think, I'm not saying the best, but my gosh she's the most beautiful articulated locomotive ever built, this late version of the Challengers.
I hope she will run again someday, but it probably won't be in my lifetime.

Yes Ed, a magnificent run by 3985. I followed that up with 844 in 2010 running at 75 mph. What a way to start off this Sat. morning.

When in 2010 and where was it?

OK, thanks. I was on that trip, but don't remember any 75 MPH running. I also thought the big magnetic Lionel sign on both sides of the tender was pretty cool., and didn't notice that Lionel" was spelled wrong either. Guess we'll have to search for photos.
HW, Lionel was spelled correctly on the tender, it is mispelled in the heading on this particular video. And the 75 mph is part of the video poster's title. I know that somewhere on one of Skip Weythman's videos, he is pacing a UP steamer while showing his car's speedometer reading 70 or 75 mph.

Just found that Youtube video by Skip, and he was correct that we were at very least 70, and pushing 75 MPH. I was riding in the DDA40X #6936 at the time, and when we did the crew exchange, at Greeley, That was when I went forward to 844. I remember we had to do double photo run-by on the ascending grade to Speer, WY. I remember getting off on the ground to watch the run-by as some UP Manager wanted to be Fireman. He made WAY TOO much smoke, and then, after the second run-by didn't know where the water went. The Engineer then had me get things sorted out, with water high in the glass, and fire the rest of the way up the grade, and down into Cheyenne.
Looked like the 3985 was hauling pretty well a few times in the above video.

Yes. I can personally attest to 70+ MPH on some occasions.
