Another option would be to build a frame-like case and enclose it behind glass (the glass will protect it from air flow and keep flowing air from picking at the paint).
Depending on what is causing the deterioration (UV light, humidity, oxidation, etc.), other things could be done within a case to further protect it without actually treating the numberboard itself.
I suggest you put matte black paper or felt behind the areas where the black has worn off. That will improve the appearance without affecting the value. You could put white behind the numbers.
