In the distant past, when I serviced LIONEL PW power trucks, I used white lithium grease dispensed in a small tube.  Since so many here laud Lucas Red 'N Tacky, I figure I'll give it a shot on some overdue maintenance for some PW F units, and recently acquired units.  When checking Lucas' website, the product is sold in a 14.5 oz. package that looks like it's dispensed like caulking; i.e. with a ratchet type gun.

How do you do it?  Also, how do you keep the product "fresh" for its next use.

Thanks.

I use a 10 ml syringe.  I replaced the rubber plunger with leather as the grease attacks the rubber over time.  The needle on the syringe allows for getting in tight places.  I fill by removing the plunger and putting the grease in the back, then replace the plunger.

You can smash the needle in a vise, not completely and it allows you to grease the axles most of the time

Here ya go. I tried to "goat" Eric Siegel & Marty E into making a better video as I sent them the youtube addy of mine. He's so darn good at making those videos! But I'll post up here. I repeat myself all the time and I could have used better camera work. I didn't get a good shot of me putting the lube inside the gear covers. I need my wife to better direct my youtube vids.

So Here it is:

Here's an assortment of syringes you can use them for glue & other stuff too: Syringe Assortment Caps & Dispensing Tips Adhesives Glue Crafts Hobby As others have said, there are more on Amazon and ebay.

I just left the Red 'N' Tacky in it's original tube that I got at Home Depot: 14 oz. Red 'N' Tacky Grease  It has a re-closeable lid. Refill syringe as needed using a craft stick or thin piece of wood or whatever you can find.

You might get it cheaper at an auto parts store, but I was already at Home Depot one day when I saw this. It's more than a lifetime supply.

I use MTH oil or LaBelle for axels etc. The Labelle was the one for O gauge I believe it is medium, maybe 107? I'll have to look for that one, I think it said O gauge on the bottle?

Will Amsoil 20-50 work?

Mr. Pingman,

Carl, Sure it will work, however, the viscosity(even at 20w) will create problems. I use Lucas' Gun Oil. It's been my only light oil for almost 15 years.

Regarding the video posted on January 3,2015 by “trainrails” demonstrating how to grease the large gear in the big boy gearbox using red ‘n tacky.  Question: Do you have to remove the grease used by Lionel at the factory before applying the red & tacky?  Will the red 'n tacky stick to the gear if you don’t remove the original grease?  Thank you for the answers.

I use an old make-up brush from one of my g-daughters make-up kit.  Its 1/4" wide, only 2" long.  I store the R n T in a small wide mouth jar.  I just dip the brush in the jar and "paint" the gears with a (lite) coat of R N T. Works great for the axle gears on my 2343 F3 and Geeps. Dont need much. just a film around the gears.  No muss no fuss.  Works for me.  Just dont get it on your wifes fine linen table-cloth or you will be sleeping with your trains!!!

I called Lionel, was told to use white lithium grease for the gears and LaBelle 102 for lubing everything else. I asked how much grease to put in the gear boxes and they said they didn't know which i thought was odd. I don't see why any good grade of synthetic grease or oil won't work.

Trainrails, thanks for posting this, your video answered all my questions on this subject.

I have all MTH engines except one which is Lionel. MTH grease looks just like the Red N Tacky (maybe Labelle 106, but I don't have any Labelle 106?). Neither is white, both are red. Red N Tacky is a blend of lithium and polymers (per label).  MTH's oil bottle says made by Labelle for MTH (does not say what Labelle product it is). I am not at all familiar with any of the Lionel lubricant products as most of my fleet is MTH.

FWIW, according to Labelle the 102 is gear oil for exposed gears and the 107 is medium weight motor oil for moving parts on HO, S, O, Lionel and Garden size scale model railroads and the 106 is for enclosed gear boxes.

Labelle has a 55 minute how-to dvd on lubricating models with their products that can be ordered from their website. Might be interesting to order one just to see what they have to say, you never know? My guess is Lionel, MTH and Labelle are all in this together as far as these lubricants go. I would be surprised if they did not discuss lubricants with one another.

Mark,

I used it as assembly lube for almost thirty-years. That was back in my street rod days. Red N Tacky has been around for many, many years. It was only available to industry before the general public. I've never heard anything about "high acid". I'm sorry, I'll agree with Jim. I don't recall anything in Lucas' Promo Paks about acid content.
