What are the safe solvents to use in cleaning the OUTSIDE BODY SHELL? for Diesel F3 A-B-A units: 2333, 2343, 2433, 2444, 2356, 2354 ... etc ... from the early 50s?
I use a soft toothbrush and liquid dish soap. Scrub very gently on the lettering, I leave them a little dirty if necessary, and don't get old decals wet.
I use STP's "Son of a Gun" protectant on plastics, it cleans, gives just a little shine, but keep it away from lettering on freight cars, I had a N&W cement hopper, and it now has a "weathered" look, which is OK as it isn't a primo piece in it's present condition.
I would not recommend using a toothbrush or even much water to clean a 2333 shell. Auto polish will clean and shine the paint. Apply with a damp, not wet cloth, let dry to a haze and wipe of with a soft, dry cloth. Then sit back and admire that glossy red and silver.
