Last night I was bidding a Lionel Corporation 400E (Proto2 Orange and Blue). I lost the bid and was a little down about it this morning. Well that was until my wife came down and said BTW I need another $950.00 to finish paying the bills this month. So I am now quite happy I didn't win, there will always be another chance to get one of these. How many times have been happy to lose the auction?

More than a few Smile There have been times where I impulsively threw a bid down and either realized I didn't want it or found it somewhere else newer/cheaper. I sweated the bids waiting for someone to top me, and usually they did. Only time I got burned was when I ended up paying $4 for a used HO car that I had found elsewhere. I can lie with $4.00 and happily paid it. Usually I set a dollar limit on eBay transactions to an amount that I would be OK (not happy, but not crushed) with losing in a bad deal, so it never gets real high. I have a similar philosophy with gambling - would I be OK (not happy but not completely screwed) if I lit that amount of money on fire in the backyard?

Weird, but it works for me Smile
SGL Lines was the only company that offered a scale Reading G3 Pacific as well as scale turtleback blimp passenger cars. Christmas of 2010 I found the engine at a great price and then last Summer started looking for the passenger cars. The passenger cars seldom come up for auction, and when they do the five car set usually sells for about $1000. In August, I bid $900 of a set and was beat out by two other bidders. Then during the Fall York, another set of cars came up for auction. This time I bid $950 and ended up winning the bid for $435! Man was I grateful that I lost the earlier auction. Big Grin

I bid my maximum bid that is my true max and if I lose it dosent bother me at all. Part of the reason why is I have so many trains and keep adding more it bothers me a little. I just won a Lionel Santa Fe GP-20 new for 83+14. It was kind of a impulse bid as there were 0 bids with 1 hr. left so I won it at the opening bid price. There were no other bids. If the seller had started out at a lower price chances are that there would of been several bidders and maybe a higher selling price. Me ever the cheapskate I asked the seller if he could lower the shipping cost to my zip code and to adjust the Pay Pal amount if so.
