Try electricity---I hear that works pretty well! Couldn't resist. 
Some can and some can't - it depends on the engine and what type of decoder is installed. Here's a resource for you that should answer all your questions:

Some DCC decoders will detect when they are being run on DC, and adapt automatically.
Some will even provide speed-related engine sound, and effects such as bells and whistles when track polarity is quickly flipped, and brake sounds under rapid deceleration.
