identifying Lionel issue dates by SKU and when did they drop pullmor motors

Folks, I have found trying to use the Lionel site to look up SKU's frustrating. It seems like ever time I want to find something out using the catalog number, like what date is was issued, I get a no return in the data field (like 6-18138). So first, am I not using the correct website maybe? Is it my unfortunate luck that I am looking up un-cataloged numbers? Second, do you guys have a rule a thumb on SKU numbers being connected to dates issued? In association, what year did Lionel drop Pullmor motors?
