Don't have your answer, but you might want to revise the thread title to have a better shot at finding someone who may help.

I suspect your auto-correct caused the "bobcat".  I clicked just to see what the heck you were talking about!

Oops. Revised. That was my laugh of the day. Thanks for pointing that out. Posting from a phone is not easy for me.

Hhmmmm....  I didn't pre-order much from this catalog, but I had one of the wedge plows (North Pole Central) on order.  Disappointing to see Lionel isn't gonna make ANY of them.    Often wonder about these cancellations... in this case, the wedge plow wasn't even a BTO product -- just a regular product item.  I guess Lionel couldn't find anyone to build it, after they came up with the idea.

Now the item I could have sworn would be cancelled was The Steel City Switcher (signature catalog) set which IS a BTO item.  Who in their right mind is gonna spend beaucoup bucks (i.e., $1050+ pre-order street pricing) on an 0-8-0 switcher and 4 freight cars???   The only reason I can see the set NOT being cancelled is Lionel used the Bethlehem Steel 0-8-0 livery to fill out the typical 300-unit minimum production run for the Legacy 0-8-0's being offered in other road-names.  Then they just produced the set's rolling stock (which they might be building anyway in different road-names) to complete the set.

Always amazing to see which products make the cut... and those that don't.

David

P.S.  As for the traditional-sized sensor boxcar being cancelled.  That's unforgivable on Lionel's part   -- especially for folks who aren't necessarily into the scale side of the hobby, but ARE into exploring the latest LCS technology.  Hopefully, it will be offered in the future.  But for now, folks will have to pony up the extra dollars for the scale version of the sensor car that has identical functionality.  But far be it from me to insinuate that Lionel might be sticking it to us "captive audience enthusiasts" once again.    I can't wait to hear the party-line at York on this one.

Hi David,

I'm one that pre-ordered  the set, my main reason for buying the set is that I want the 1st car in the set most all. That gondola "Patapsco & Back River RR" is the actual Railroad that operated the railroad for the Bethlehem Steel Company at Sparrows Point, MD. which at one point was the largest steel mill in America. For which my Dad was a brakeman for and a Uncle was a Engineer for them. I tried to get a job with them in the early 70's which never panned out, but I was better off getting in the fire dept. At no time did I ever see trains down there, that were marked as Bethlehem Steel.

To see the place today you would have never imagined that at one time a steel plant sat there. Today the tracks still carry trains, but I do not know by who? I've seen NS bringing in & out cars, and I have seen on occasion some of the P&BR RR (as my dad & others would call them the PUSH BATTER & RAM RR) old engines still operating. I used to hear all of the latest until I retired from the fire dept. in '12 because a lot times I worked at the fire station across the street from the main office of the steel plant & railroad.

There are plans to put a deep sea port since the ships have to go by there to get to the Port of Baltimore. I took this photo about a week ago so if anyone could tell me what do you think is going on please let me know since I'm puzzled by all of the tank cars sitting there? They had no oil or chemical facilities there for over 35 years. I could understand hoppers since they did bring in there coal & oar by ships.

The last photo I took a few months ago of some flats taking some machines out of the old plant.

So that gondola does hit home for me since my dad & many other family & friends that had worked there, have passed on and I still live under a couple miles from there is just a memory.

Hi Paul,

I'm sure the Steel City Switcher set will call several people for a variety of special reasons.  My family moved to the Lehigh Valley in 1971 when Bethlehem Steel was THE premier employer in the area, along with Mack Trucks and Air Products.  Of course, like you're seeing in Sparrows Point, you'd never know Steel Plants even existed in these locations now that everything steel-related is a mere shadow of its former self.

I also had pre-ordered the Steel City Switcher set from Charlie Ro, when it was listed on Charlie's website for $925 or so.  Even at that, I thought it was a steep price for an 0-8-0 switcher and 4 freight cars.  But that was the MAX I was willing to pay and still convince myself it was a "good purchase" for a sentimental item.  Then I received the back-order email from Charlie Ro indicating a price of $1050, which prompted a call to Charlie immediately.  Apparently, there was some internal price change/error or whatever.  Bottom line...  the pre-order price was gonna be $1050, at which point I told Charlie to cancel my pre-order.  He suggested we just leave everything as is for now, and see what happens when the set is delivered.  And if the price remains at $1050, I could cancel if I wanted to at that time.  I've ordered from Charlie for decades, so I was OK with that arrangement.

Candidly speaking... I have a handful of Bethlehem Steel branded train items, and this set -- especially the Legacy 0-8-0 switcher -- would add nicely to my Beth Steel roster.  But I'm not about to pay Lionel's latest inflated prices just because Lionel wants to see its enthusiasts jump higher every year.  I checked Charlie's website.  And now that the "early-buy" period has expired, this set is listed at $1100, and the individual Legacy 0-8-0 switchers are listed at $750.  Not sure how other folks view these new prices, but I haven't gotten any nibbles (yet) on my brand new Lionel N&W #612J that I listed for-sale here on the forum at $795.  So I sure as heck ain't gonna be spending $750 for an 0-8-0 switcher -- not to mention the extra $350 for two gondolas, one flat car, and one caboose.  Just ain't gonna happen.

Since the set hasn't been cancelled, I'll probably just watch this all unfold from the sidelines...  and wait for a blow-out sale for either the set itself or just the locomotive from a dealer break-up.  I hope you're able to get the freight car you wanted, since there's obviously some sentimental importance you're attaching to it.  I've noticed a handful of dealers still have Lionel ES44's, NYC ESE Hudsons and NYC ESE passenger sets still sitting in inventory.  And now, many of these BTO "extras" bought on spec by dealers can actually be found today at lower prices than folks paid at pre-order time.

So this is really the year I'm pushing back on Lionel's prices.  I don't need this new stuff.  It's purely discretionary dollars, and I'm done digging deeper every year when Lionel dangles the carrot higher.  I pre-ordered a couple of items, but none of the really big-ticket stuff.  As I've said in the past, if Lionel is honestly telling us that a set like the Steel City Switcher needs an $1300MSRP (or $1100 street-price) to be profitable for Lionel and its dealer network, then I just as soon suggest they not make the product to begin with.  My thoughts alone aren't gonna change Lionel's tactics one iota.  But if enough folks leave this stuff sitting on dealer shelves, the message will get through loud and clearly.  By going BTO, Lionel has essentially buffered itself from direct inventory overstock, and shuffled that risk off to its dealer/distributor network.  But after a year or two of getting burned with overstock, dealers won't order as much in subsequent years... so Lionel will get the message eventually.

David

P.S.  This segway to the Steel City Switcher probably warranted its own thread... didn't mean to sidetrack the discussion of Lionel cancelling the traditional-sized sensor car.  Just seemed so puzzling that something as reasonably priced as the traditional sensor car that exploits the new LCS technology would get cancelled.  Yet Lionel appears to be proceeding with production of an obviously over-priced "premium set".  Then again, that shouldn't be too puzzling, since Lionel's anticipated profit margin on the Steel City Switcher set must be ENORMOUS.
