Although the Utah Transit Authority has been warning the public that the practice is not safe, the Senate gave final passage Wednesday to a bill that would allow driving through railroad crossings as soon as guard gates rise — and before warning lights stop flashing.

New law just passed in Utah today. The sponsor is my senator and a huge jackhole. He usualy insists his way is the best and we should just let him handle it. But hey must be true cuz he keeps getting re-elected. Just love his reasoning for carrying the bill

Not one vote against... Amazing!

And when the first person drives into a train on the second track and dies, the state will feel the bite for this, big time. Because along with the railroad, the people who built the car and processed the gas being burned (you know how it goes, everyone except the driver themself), the family will sue the heck out of the state as well for passing the law that 'allowed' the driver to do this.

Frankly, I can see this being overturned on a federal level or being lobbied against by RR unions.

I was on an Amtrak that hit and killed a pedestrian.  My train was heading south and passing a north bound freight.  The freight cleared the crossing.  The lady walked around the gates as soon as the freight passed the crossing and directly into the path of my train.  The crossing lights were flashing and the gates were down.  This crossing has a gate guarding a heavily traveled side walk in addition to the normal street gates.

Giving people legal permission to ignore the flashing lights and gates is just stupid.  You save a couple of seconds and lose a lifetime.

e pushed the bill because a constituent complained he received a ticket for going through a crossing after gates were rising, but before flashing lights stopped. Jenkins admitted he has done the same thing often, and said it should be allowed.

By that logic, you should call and tell him you got a speeding ticket, and if he's also sped, he should introduce a bill to make speeding legal.

Repeat for every dumb thing you can think of.

How long will stop signs last? Cuz I bet he's rolled through one of those too.

What idiotic logic.

All this does is give the second car in line an excuse to start blasting his horn when the first car doesn't move fast enough when the gates go up.  I use to sell newspapers sunday mornings at a dunkin donuts that was next to a 2 track crossing.  Needless to say I spent a lot of time watching impatient people try stupid stuff.  Multiple times I'd see someone try to speed through when the gates were coming down and more often they'd get a nice scrape on their paint job when the gate came down on top of them.

They're not being stupid on someone else's dime. We're paying people to think this way. And it's not exclusive to State politics. I thought this was going to be about "no horn blowing" at intersections. That would be icing on the cake.

Most politicians have the intellect of a 7th grader, beats working.  A few years ago, in Derry, Pa., in western Pa., a woman was crossing the NS double track main coming home from sopping. She had a baby in a stroller with some groceries and the stroller got stuck on the tracks. I guess it was too heavy to pick up and the groceries kept her from getting the baby out. A west bound freight rounded a curve about 1/4 mile away an killed both the mother and baby. Tragic ?? Yes but right next to this spot was a bridge to cross the tracks with a sidewalk. I have shot a lot of video at this place and know it. Thy put a fence up before but people cut holes in it so they could cross the tracks, the cops issued tickets but the mayor told them to stop-too many complaints.  You just can't fix stupid !!
