James Lion Chief Stalling

I bought a James Lion Chief set for our Grandson a year ago for Christmas, was only set up this past Christmas and now he stalls and won't run unless you push down on him or squeeze his boiler slightly. Contacts seem fine, opened him up and wires all seem fine thinking it might be the board? Anyone have any experience with this engine and this problem?
