so, the K-Line 4-6-4 growls round very smoothly on O27 (although it clearly isn’t preferred). I have a rolling road coming, so not much more of that. Reversing cycle works smoothly.
The tender is set to RS=OFF and when I actuate the “whistle” lever, I get the bell. Is there any way of getting the whistle using a KW transformer? I’d prefer the whistle, if I can only have one.

Reverse the two wires from the transformer either at the transformer or the track connections. Whistle and bell respond to DC offsets, one positive the other negative. Not sure which is which but reversing the wires will give you the other sound. Lionel made a bell activation button to add to your transformer which will allow you to activate both.

Whistle is positive, bell is negative.
That seems to do the trick. I’ve now sourced a bell activation button so that should be the answer longer term.
Next job is to try the Lionel Berkshire, I assume it will work the same way?
If one factory locomotive works with the control, most others should to. However, do note that the older PW transformers need a load to generate the DC offset, sometimes the modern locomotives don't draw enough current to get a decent DC offset.
