Looking at the manual I’ve found online for my K Line 4-6-4, it shows two switches under the tender for sound control and smoke on/off.
This isn’t what I find.
What I actually have, are two on/off switches under the tender marked respectively, RS and E, and an (otherwise unmarked) on/off switch under the rear bogie of the locomotive
can anyone identify the function of these?

If it's on the Locomotive it's probably the smoke unit switch and the one on the tender is most likely railsounds.
The "E" could be for the E unit locking in the direction of travel.

Oh. The one that says RS is for sound and the E most likely for the e unit as you said. The one on the engine is for the smoke.
Ok that’s useful, thanks. Sounds like I should set it RS = OFF, E = ON, loco = OFF for the time being
I thought the RS in the "on" position would be Railsounds (command-TMCC or DCS) and "off" would be Signalsounds (conventional operation). As Boomer0622 posted, the E switch selects if the E-unit is locked in a direction or in the default FWD-N-REV setup.
