I came across some K-Line GG1s for a very good price. They are described as "Modern era", #2780-4912. I'mm not familiar with these K-Line models. Should I be wary of the low price ? I s there anything about these GG1s that I should know ?

These might be one of the K-Line collectors club units. They were originally offered for $100.00 as being a member of the club. They came in conventional operation only, but you could upgrade them to TMCC. This could explain the low price you are referencing.
So they will run on a conventional transformer such as a ZW or KW ?
I have 2: BlackJack 4935 and Green 5 stripe that was the KCC Locomotive some years ago. Both upgraded to TMCC/Cruise by the late Boxcar Bill. I love them. Smooth operation, fantastic pulling power. Ran Green 5-stripe on conventional for some time before adding TMCC.
Some of them did come with TMCC already, I bought one such unit 2nd hand never opened. It's one of my favorites. Pulls tree stumps, has good slow speed.
If it is the K-Line Collector's Club be sure that the side frames on the trucks are attached, some of the K-Line collector club GG-1's will lose the sides on the trucks because of zinc pest, mainly a cosmetic thing. Also the collector's club when it says TMCC ready just has a plug-in for TMCC and nothing else.
If the K-Line GG-1 is full scale then it should not have any issues that I know of.

Yes, they will.
Got one with TMCC from factory. Tuscan single stripe. Great runner. Truck sides fell off but I replaced them with MTH. Sounds are okay. Horn is nice.
They came in conventional and TMCC. There was also an issue with the wiring of something being wired back words. Help me out guys...it's been a while but I remember it being an easy fix.
I picked one up that was the TMCC unit and I ran it all day at our layout at Cal Stewart with no issues. I also had to replace a couple of side truck frames which I used the Lionel units which I adjusted to fit. Great engine!
I remember them being offered For $100 or you could get the TMCC upgrade for more money don't remember how much more but it seems like it was only about $50 more probably wrong on the amount but I remember it as a option
Well, $85.00 plus $15.00 shipping seemed like too good a deal to pass up. I bought one of the tuscan versions the seller had. The green five strip was sold and I believe there is still another five strip tuscan version for sale.

If it is a TMCC the 9 volt battery plugs were wired backward.
I have 2 of these, both run great with no issues. K-2780-4912 Tuscan Brown w TMCC, (original price $250 from K-line) and K-2780-4892 Green conventional (original price $100.00 from K-line)
My side frames are fine, and yes, the battery was wired backwards on mine. I swapped the pins in the PCBA connector and all was right. Easy fix, no soldering or wire cutting needed.
I just bought a K Line GG1 (K2780-48921 C) . It's a beautiful engine. The engine has electro couplers and I am a conventional runner. Is there a way to activate the couplers? I replaced the battery and the rail sounds work fine, except that occasionally when I activate the horn the engine stops. I am using a Lionel ZW transformer. I can play with the whistle control on the transformer to get the engine to remain running, but it is sensitive to the DC signal I guess.
great locos I have two I converted to TMCC with ERR components. one did have two truck side frames crumble but I found Lionel ones on eBay and they need just a bit of filing to fit the K line trucks.
