When you have a minute , would you share how you did the tall grass in this picture? Source, type, method . . .?

Patricks Tall Grass 01

Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex I think that tall grass is called prairie puffs

scenic express sells them. But Patrick would have to

confirm this. If you look through there catalog there's

a lot of different types. Here's the link

http://www.sceneryexpress.com/products.asp?dept=1056

But Patrick that scene just look's amazing

Great work.

THANKS, ALEX

Patricks last layout update, March 17th? So that leads me to believe one of the following:

1) No updates because he is going to have a major feature in OGR magazine and Allan forbid him to post any more photos.

2) Major domestic dispute which of course ended with the Mrs. blaming all of their problems on the train layout, which she then took a chainsaw to while he was at work.

3) Patrick made the deadly mistake of combining JT Mega Steam, MTH, and Lionel premium smoke fluid which we all know is highly combustible.

None of the them, its this one.

4)    Patrick runs his own business which is in the middle of the  worst, longest, government crushing, drawn out economic depression Ive seen in 27 years. Now working  7 am - 7PM to keep it afloat. Daughter one just graduated college wants another round of funds for grad school. Son just graduated High School needs help for college, daughter two's hobby is showing and jumping horses every weekend ,and finally daughter three luckily isnt old enough to spend to much but does like some of dads time..

So i am pretty much shut down on the layout until September when they go back to school, I should pretty much finish up the first phase before October. I have done  quite a few more areas in April and May. So maybe i ll see some of you again  around york time.

Thanks for checkin up on me though.

Great Job Patrick!!! I was shocked to hear that you have 4 kids because from your picture you look much younger. There is no rush for the layout as it's coming along fantastic. I just don't understand how you got so much done in just that little time...I mean really you have 4 kids and a job. I have no kids and not even married and yet I seem to be taking much longer then you with progress with my layout. Mind if I ask when you have your free time and your kids are in school how often do you spend on the layout a week...do you work on it every day after work etc etc? I'm sorry if you had already answered this in another post.

Keep up the great work! Enjoy the wonderful times with your daughters!! I always wanted kids of my own.

Regards,

Matt

Patrick, Outstanding work!  Haven't been on in a while, but the finishing touches are looking great.

I looked (again) through most of the thread, and didn't see a photo that showed it.  But how did you finish the inside of the ends of the tunnels. Is it just the painted backside of the foam that is visible on the outside, or is there some sort of other inner structure there?

Hi Patrick, I'm in the process of planning for a roundhouse and was wondering who makes the 4 stall engine shed that you have?? Also I was thinking of ordering the 34" Millhouse turntable as well and was wondering if you had any issues with it and how does it operate without indexing?

Thanks!
Matt

Hi Alex, thanks for the video link. I love the way it looks and operates and best of all it's 34" which is what I need to twist my Big Boy around Thanks for your input on the Mill House turn table. You wouldn't happen to know what engine house Patrick is using?? I want to look up the dimensions so I can see if the house will fit on my layout.

Thanks!

Hey Matt,

without a doubt the nicest Roundhouse out there now is Daves from Crescent Locomotive works. Not to mention it is around 400(4 stall) and highly interior detailed and pre assembled.Blows everything out there away.It even comes with service steps and catwalks as well as smoke collectors and flues and miniature lighting. He dosnt have it up online yet but i seen it at york.Give him a call he is a super nice guy and really  appreciates his customers before and after the sale.

The one i am using is Richs Korber models which is also extremely nice. Check out all the images on the internet you can , their are alot of good things that can be done to it.

Also for the turntable you may want to also look at Steve's "ross" turntables as well, and there is also a new (well a few years old)programmable push button keypad that stops the bridge at ANY track buy pushing the button head or tail that you may want to negotiate price with and discuss incorporating into the new one you get, since it comes with a motor.

I have mine hooked up to a Dallee indexer now but either turntable can be swung very slow if needed to eyeball. But i have asked Santa for this one below.

Patrick,

I had been in HO and N for 45 years, but as my eyes and hands have gotten older I have finally seen the light of O!  It is a fantastic scale!  I recently got on the OGR Forum and just today found your never ending thread.   I am amazed with what you have done!  It isn't just the size of the layout.  The craftsmanship and artistic value are great!  I still have a lot to look over.  Thank you so much for sharing your photos and ideas.  I truly appreciate it.

Happy Model Railroading,

Mark Boyce

Patrick, Thanks for all the great info. I checked out the Ross TT in the past but for one they want $200 to ship there 33 turntable and second I think I prefer that extra inch by going with the 34 that M House makes. As for the programming option I can always add that on later on when more money comes in How much for the one Santa is bringing? I like the looks of that one.

As for the Engine house for the Roundhouse you mentioned Daves from Crescent which I will most definitely look into that one...wish they had pics and dimensions up on there site. I like the one you have from Korber but was wondering if it was difficult and time consuming to assemble?..how much did you pay for the 4 stall kit?

Actually, I like the extra inch that comes with the Millhouse turntable as well.  HOWEVER, whichever one you ultimately choose, that's what York is for!!!    I'm sure they'd bring one to York, and you could then save on shipping altogether.

We connected the MRS 34" to the ERR DC Commander, set it to 100 speed steps, and it will turn so slow, you can't tell whether it's moving or not No reason to add an index kit with that kind of performance if you're worried about being able to line it up by eye. I think Rich has a footprint of the Korber kit on his website now.

Sounds good,

There are alot of ways to do it.If i remember correctly i had my last one hooked up to and SC1 or 2.   Could control direction/on off with cab1.Even a powermaster etc  would work.... I only like the indexer cause you push the button and thats it, helps running in the dark and if you dont have a good eye sight or angle  to make sure its perfectly lined up.Makes for some fireworks if not.\

As for the footprint there has to be someone here that can give you that, if not ill measure that tonight. The roundhouses fits confortably inside a 072 radius with 5 stalls maybe 6.Check the earlier pics.As far as the total length its somewhere earlier in this thread, think page 3-5.

The programmable one above is 375  +  25-50 for extra options.Thats why i said whoever you decide to go with them working with you to incorporate the programmable one into the turntable could make the difference in the deal, because it also has a motor. If you dont want it now then it dosnt make a difference anyway .You can just throw a dallee  on it later for 80bucks.

Honestly Matt I dont remember what the Korber kit cost,it wasnt a big ticket item per say, others can chime in on that ,in addition Rich also has the wooden doors for the korber now . Both Rich and Dave are super people so you ll  ultimately have to decide.

Hi guys, Thought I'd let you all know that we are coming out with our own indexing system shortly and it will be retrofit-able to all of our prior turntables.

Some of the great features will be that you won't have to have your tracks spaced evenly or at any particular degree in order to line up the bridge track to the whisker tracks around the table. Just line up the bridge with your track, program that position into memory and it is set.

Another great feature is that depending how far away the track is that you want to go to it will move at slow speed for close tracks or ramp up to high speed and then ramp down as the bridge approaches the destination track , then stops at that track. Just like the prototype.

As far as a price, I can tell you it will be less than the base system Patrick pointed out  above.

Hi Al, I think I'm going to go with one of your 34's. I would love to order it with your new index option but I was trying to keep the cost down since I am going also need to order a Roadhouse (preferably Korber) If I were to order one of your 34's with some added options that you have available is there any chance maybe you can add the index option at a discounted price?

Thanks!

And the factory looks awesome!! Did you add those lights or did it come in a kit?? Great work!!

I am using some of that space for bookshelves in hopes of sound deadening also looks cool and gives me some extra book space. The other areas are going to be wainscoting pine or cedar about 38 inches tall. Also in this area are long term plans include a swing in "secret" book case for an access port. Hope this helps
