2013 Layout progress review pics and video

Thank you for your reply. Sounds like we were talking to the same person. Arrogance is a very kind description. He must have so much business that he can pick and choose his customers. Good for him. Guess this goes into the "I wish I could have done that" unobtainium category. Odd in this case when money, for once wasn't the issue. I almost considered paying someone else to get the backdrop from him if it would have made it easier. I spent several hours poking around the website and never found the "free design software" advertised on the home page.

Your layout is incredible and the backdrop does look great. I was still working to finish my attic when you first started posting. The attic is finished now and the bench work for my little 14x34 layout is still a pile of wood. I'll be making sawdust, soon.

Incredible Job Patrick!

I just need to know how you got the Keebler Elves to work on your layout. It's amazing how much you have accomplished in just over a year. You really put the rest of us to shame. Nice work

I read all 6 pages and this is a instructional post, thanks. I guess you don't take a lot of newspaper reading breaks like me, LOL. Hey I'm retired, I'm suppose to take it easy, but I do work on my layout and make progress, just much slower.

Most impressive Patrick. How did you make the wooden trestles? I have a curve and need to drop elevation and have been looking for a clever way of accomplishing this. Thanks in advance.

Patrick, that's looking awesome! Perhaps a slightly darker color gravel road and parking lot 2cnd picture down, unless you're planning to pave it. Sometimes it’s hard to tell color balance from photos.

You mean that dosnt look good? LOL I have kids, i let them do certain sections as i come around to to change some things. Im just about done posting pics. I am starting to get serious about finishing some areas.

As for the contrast , i like to see the pics on the screen,It shows everything and helps when later i go to give it the final touches.However the rock dosnt look that dark in person, its more of a dirt color.

That's awesome that your kids are involved with the layout! Get 'em hooked when they're young, so they pass on their train addiction to your grand children

You've made such a huge amount of progress in a year, hope my progress a year from now is at least 1/4 of what you've accomplished. Room is almost done, benchwork begins soon!

Keep us posted, always look forward to seeing your progress. Tell your kids they're doing a great job too.

I ran out of compliments and no longer am I surprised at your progress. But I do want to say that I really enjoyed the last video .

Also, I am usually able to identify the objects in your pictures, but can't figure out what is the red item that looks like a flag (though I don't believe it is a flag) about half way down this picture, on the left side in front of (or behind) the car.

You are funny. Close. Thats a pair of scissors I stuck into the foam.Thats my favorite corner for sticking screwdrivers etc into, easy to find.


Also the pinnisula in the middle has completely changed already since this has been takin. Didnt like the electric company there. And changed the track work for the 5 th time.

Aha! I thought I recognized the "Fiskars Monument" on that hill. Seriously, I lose tools faster than any man alive today, I can appreciate your logic

At 24 to 28 feet in 1/48th scale, that could easily pass as a 'Modern Art' exhibit.

On another note - I noticed that you had two cabooses trailing your impressive coal train. Was this something that occurred in real life, albeit perhaps infrequently, or something you just felt like doing? (Just curious . . )

back in the 70's my father took me to all the train shows. We bought the same Lionel hudson casting , in a different color scheme for nearly 20 years.We enjoyed them all.

There was a time when i could tell you every item number in the greenburgh price guide by mentioning the name.

But as far as real trains and railroads, i dont know any facts or knowledge. I just love toy trains and over the years try to make my layouts more real looking at historical pics but yet still keep it fun.

LOL Patrick, here I thought the paving crew had finally arrived! Are you planning to put dirt/gravel over the dark primer areas?

Oh well, whether two cabooses together are factual real-life is inmaterial anyway - I think your two red cabooses look neat!

I have been following the thread for over a year and it's unbelievable what you have accomplished on your layout. So many of us look forward to your posting of photos as well as the technical help offered.I am sure you get great pride from sharing it. I would too!
Happy Thanksgiving. I am inspired to put in long hours to have my christmas layout ready this year and will share my experiences also.

Placing buildings and I am working on the front left corner.I ll eventually weather them and then sell them 1 at a time as i make time to build my own. The will due for now and plenty of empty lots available on oppistie side of street.
also put the trolley track i flush with the road.

Patrick, you are the three rail version of Lorrell Joiner, RIP. If you don't know who he was, realize it is a big compliment.

Yes i know a little about him.

However the ONLY similarity I think that would be the same is wanting to build a layout that you "walk into" and when you look around you shrink into the surroundings. This is accomplished by knee to ceiling scenery building. Ive seen only 2 of these and it puts you near the crazy line of wanting to escape. LOL

Im just trying to have some fun and relieving the stress, not good enough to be serious.

Dont take it as a slap , i really appreciate the kind words, but their are alot of real craftsmen on here.

Looking at your street scene under construction on Nov 21 (2nd picture), and finished on Nov 26 (3rd picture) is quite a contrast, and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY! I noticed you also painted the lamp posts - can't wait to see a night shot with the lamps lit!

I have to say I am really struggling with the palet color of the street. I really liked the black primer, but to modern looking. Not the priority now until i get some of my own buildings built on the track side and weather the others.Then ill see what i can do with it.

Also the telephone poles location.

What do you guys think, along the mainstreet or along the track?

I was thinking maybe both. Probubly a big mistake to do now.But like to plan a little. Did i say plan?

Patrick in the scheme of things was the railroad there and the town grew up or was the town there and the railroad came to town. That would help make the decision where the telephone poles go. Close to the track if the railroad came first or close to the street if the town came first. Just a thought.

I love your progress reports but I do have one problem. I have to make sure my customers don't see how fast you are 'cause' I ain't dat fast! Great job! Russ
