Hi there, please excuse my high level of ignorance. I'm ripping apart a LEGACY base and had some basic questions. It seems to me that the LEGACY base unit is only receiving signals from the 2.4GHz remotes, and down-converting and passing them to the track, but doesn't actually have a transmitter inside?
Does this mean it doesn't transmit anything back to the remotes?

No, you're just not looking correctly. The base certainly does transmit to the CAB2, all the locomotive descriptions are stored in the base and sent to the CAB2. Trust me, there's a transmitter in there. 
Both the CAB2 and the base have two-way communication with each other.
The antenna does Tx and Rx on the base, how else would a new handheld to the base know what locomotives are stored in the base?
