Norfolk & Western #244 was the first Railking model of a USRA 0-8-0 steam engine made by MTH Trains – product number (30-1111-1) - delivered in 1997 at MSRP $379.00 with PS1. Although the model is modest, the locomotive is significant. N&W #244 was built by the Roanoke Shops in December 1953 and was the last reciprocating steam locomotive built for an American Class 1 railroad.

- not exactly "prototypical", but -

I'm gonna take you big/fancy N&W folks back to basics!

I had an old 6066T in poor condition and decided to give it a second life. it was in a 'parts' box missing a truck with some drippy chemical/cleaner damage. i gave it a light sanding with 600~1000 grit followed by a fresh coat of engine black and then add some k4 water decals gives this tender a little local N&W~N&S flavor. (I live in VA)

N&W is also a favorite railroad of mine, makes up a sizable portion of my collection. Unfortunately everything is boxed up until I can get a suitable layout built. Some older photos of two brass N&W engines I have are in the "Show Me Your Brass" thread. I cannot find where I have those photos on my hard drive so just incluing the link.

I also had the privilege of receiving a custom run 2-8-0 from Mr Muffin's Trains and weathered by Harry Heike about a year ago (pictured below). It is not prototypical, but it is probably the closest I will ever get to an N&W consolidation in 3 rail O. I selected #684 because I thought that N&W 684 most closely matched the 2-8-0 model being produced based on photos from the N&W Historical Society. I made a thread here with a few more pictures.

I only have the Big Three Steam but have 3 ‘J”’s one Premier, one RailKing and one PostWar. But more importantly where is Scott in the string knowing where he lives and the Hobby Shop he deals with and the shops owner I believe Scott probably has every N&W Steam locomotive that has ever been release and pretty sure every cab number of every “J” every released!!!

The camera position/height relative to the prototype Y in the background is a real homerun, reminds me of old railroad advertisements.

I don't have a whole lot of N&W (a lot more of its successor) but this is the biggest of the lot, reaching back to a buy-anything-cool thread from August 2023 (page 343):

My only N&W engine.  It's a MTH Rail King Y6b with Proto sounds.  I bought it from Trainland many years ago when they were clearing out Proto sounds equipment.  I believe Proto 3 was still on the horizon but Proto 2 had been around for a while.  I've added a homemade auxiliary tender.IMG_2652

I too love the J-s  (have 4), and one day hope to get the Y6B and A-class. Your pics and videos are especially cool on your layouts ...very inspirational.

I wish Lionel would make Vision versions, or at least remakes, of the real big N&W engines like the Y6b ... just like they tend to do with the popular UP Big Boy.

I thought that I had posted this before; maybe elsewhere...

But, anyway: my N&W "cheater" K-2, from years ago.

Lionel factory-weathered Warhorse J, larger pilot wheels ("General" spoked), scale 2-wheel trailing truck, FWH under running board (needs doing better), scratch-ish tender. The tender was lengthened using original frame, trucks re-positioned farther apart, scratch-built body (styrene underpinnings, scratch brass shell), original TMCC electronics.

A lot of work for a cute but, at the end of the day, a loco that's still Postwar-size. Also, it runs poorly. Pullmors are a strange lot: sometimes they are smooth, steady and good enough for today. Sometimes they zoom-bog-zoom-bog...this is one of those. Gearing, I guess. Great sounds.

The Lionel "J" was my childhood favorite Lionel PW loco. Never had one until this Warhorse.

I finished up a N&W C30-7 recently.

It is a MTH PS1 that detailed and painted. I painted the handrails, stanchions and the airhorns to match the MTH painted body shell. I repainted the number boards into the correct white background with black numbers

I also modified the truck frames to achieve a reasonable resemblance to the trucks used on the N&W engines. I milled off the under frame brake cylinders and the added the upper type cylinders.

I added some cut levers and windshield wipers. Topped it off with the firecracker antenna.

I may weather the unit. The PS 1 system is a bit shaky. The engine runs fine, but the sound is messed up. There is no volume control and the bell rings constantly. It appears the boards may have been modified. I could also just end up gutting the engine and making a dummy unit out of it…
