Lighting A Caboose--What Do I Need? (Done!)

I would be careful with putting a light in one of these cars. I doubt if the plastic walls will take much heat before it melts, so I would use an LED lamp.

Also the inside of the car may have to have a coat of flat black paint applied to it so as to keep the light from bleeding through the walls.

Lionel makes a roller pick up that snaps on the truck.

you need two of them and the light socket it comes with bulb.

 it will not melt the body there low heat.

I can see how the caboose is assembled.  There are tabs on the windows that hold the window/roof assembly in place.  I can't reach the tabs with my fingers, so I am not sure how to press the tabs in without breaking or scratching the windows.

After you get the pickup rollers you can use LEDs. Several ways I do it are shown here

Without rollers another option is to install a battery with a shut off switch mounted on the bottom.. With a 9 volt battery you could wire the LEDs in series of 3. A battery would last a long time.

Hi Harry, I like the snap on roller pick-up idea. I may give you a call also!

I like the snap in rollers there made to fit those trucks with out removing truck.

 Have used them for outher projects.

The collector assembly part number is 9050-150 if you want to fit Lionel rolling stock with lighting:

They are about $4.50 each.  The 9160-20 bulb and socket is about $2.00.

No you won't need anything. Glad you got your caboose done.

Once you go to Command Control, Put the car on the powered track and feel the top closest to the bulb after a few minutes.

If it's hot, I recommend a voltage regulator to reduce the power to the bulb.

A simple resistor will work, bur a regulator and a Cap will take out the flicker and make the light stay the same brightness all the time.
