I am repairing this slipped worm wheel gear on a friend's Lionchief Hogwarts Express.

I repaired it for him in August by making a small chisel from an old nail punch, supporting it in a crescent wrench held in a vice and chiseled in grooves parallel to the axle.

I added Locktite blue (which I had in my workshop) and pressed the gear back into place.  It took a lot of force to press the gear so I thought we were home free.  But it has failed again and the gear is slipping.

So besides the obvious option of repeating this with Locktite Red, any other suggestions to make this a permanent fix?

Bob

First, check for any cracks in the gear. They can be hard to spot, so look closely and verify no cracks. If it’s cracked, it’s done ……..Loctite red or blue is specifically for threads. This is a different animal. You want loctite 640, 680, or equivalent. 640 or 680 is sleeve & shaft retainer. That is what is best suited for this job. Clean all your mating surfaces again, do a light re-stake of the splined area, clean, clean, clean is the word here. Clean the parts as best you can with alcohol, apply a dot of green 640 or 680, to the splines and get some on the gear where it meets the axle. Press or knock your gear back where it belongs, and clean up any residual compound. ……allow to full cure for 24 hrs. …..should be good to go then….

I ask in all ignorance if the replacement wheel set is available still, and, if so, why not just replace it?  Expense?  Seems like a new gear would give longer life, no?  Educate me, please.  Thanks.

I just looked, and you’re correct, a replacement axle set is available,…..if Bob doesn’t have shaft retainer on hand, buying a new axle set would be a good route to go,…..I’d fix it if it were mine, and save those pesos,…..

Thanks, Pat.

I already made the chisel and figured out how to support it and pound the gear back in place, so I might as well  buy some 640 or 680 and give it a go!
