As I put together my cement plant project, I am using the 456 coal ramp to deliver pretend sand (not hauling real sand to dump) and gravel instead of coal. Is the coupler supposed to be spring loaded and move back into the housing? I have not taken this apart yet to investigate the problem, but the car will not couple to the fixed coupler in the tower, it gets pushed back into the housing and will not latch up.

The coupler is fixed and not supposed to move. There are the two springs, one on each side, which keep the car under tension so it will push away when uncoupled.

I remember reading that the new Lionel hopper cars with the dumping mechanism will not couple to the original coal ramp for some reason. You need an original apparently.
Well, the 456 does have the original hopper with it. Sounds like I will have to open it up and take a look.
