I have this PRR Mikado and the smoke unit on it doesn't smoke. I feel air and I think I feel heat. I want to open it up to look at the condition of the wick and batting. I can't get the top off. Any ideas on how I do that?

Take a screw driver and put it inside hole and use it to lightly pry up. Have done this a million times on old postwar units that have tons of gunk on them.

Thanks. Got it.
Heres the heater. Should I replace it? It measuring at 27 ohms.

Definitely replace it with a new Lionel 27ohm resistor with no cover and replace the batting with the 8 inch fiber glass batting used in new Locomotives.
Alright. I'll do that. I've given thought to replacing the smoke unit to a fan driven unit. Is that possible?

Email GRJ with that question. He is the expert when it comes to fan driven smoke unit upgrades. My guess is you could use a very small mth unit.

Yep
Nothing is impossible, or at least most things. Without measurements, I can't say for sure what would fit. I know that the LC+ smoke unit would probably fit, it might be possible to get the MTH unit in there, it looks like it would be somewhat tight.

I was thinking the LC+ unit. It's the same model as this. I'd be curious to know how the smoke unit is mounted in it though. If it's in the boiler or connected to the frame like this is. I think I much just dump the puffer and do the fan driven unit. Here's the part breakdown: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...e3-85c5-d78d26fde008
Remember, if you want chuffing smoke, you have to add fan control. Also, you need a fan power supply for any smoke from these units.
