Did you order just the ring? You can buy the whole motor with the ring for about 32 bucks. Trying to pull the flywheel and replacing it is very difficult. AFAIK Lionel does not make a replacement flywheel for these as they do for the Odyssey motors with a set screw.

This locomotive has a flywheel with two opposing set screws. It was already loose when I removed the shell. Appears to be simple slots on the end of the set screws. Do you think someone's already been messing around in this engine?

I may be wrong here. The flywheel with the optical ring is listed as having a 2mm thread. Maybe they have started to make replacement flywheels for legacy. Every Mabuchi motor I have seen by any manufacturer has a pressed on flywheel. Lionel shows just the ring, the flywheel with ring mounted, and the complete motor. If you can remove your flywheel by loosening screws I think I would get the flywheel with the ring mounted. Otherwise the whole motor. The dogbones on these Liondrive motors tend to wear so having a spare motor is a good idea. Those dogbones are pressed on and essentially not replaceable.

I think many (most) of the Legacy flywheels have setscrews.
