Pardon me I'm a newbie to the O Gauge forum and I'm still wishing for what I can do in the future with my train. I have a Lionel O Gauge coal car that goes with the Polar Express Train set. The coupler is broken so I bought a set of trucks with working couplers to replace the existing truck and coupler on the coal car. The problem is I can not seem to get the car apart to get to the screw holding the wheel trucks on. I removed one screw from the underside of the car. The other screw just seems to spin in place. Does anyone have any advice, suggestions, or general recommendations.

BTW: I really enjoy looking at everyone's layouts, plans and progress. I hope to learn a lot from you all and one day I can build my own layout.

Cheers,

David W.

I think there are four screws one in each corner. A stripped screw may need a little help. I lift with a small blade, or pin, under the screw head lifting, and turning with a screwdriver simultaneously. Doing it on its side helps, or upside down can help too.

There is an item called a cradle. Look into making, or buying one for your repair on nicer items. Filling the stripped hole with a silicone, will hold it in again fine most often.

One out, It may take some wiggling and force if its a tight fitting shell.

What do you have to run on now?

Hello Adriatic,
Thank you for your input and advice. I had no idea that there were four screws in the corners. I thought the two in the middle would undo the top of the car. Well now I know. I also discovered I have the wrong wheel trucks with coupler to replace the broken coupler on the coal car. The coupler on the coal car does not stay latched. It looks like something or some part came off from the underside of the coupler that holds it closed. I guess I have to go to the hobby shop, unless someone has some input on potential idea for repairs.

I have a Lionel O gauge "Polar Express" set. And right now I just have a train board that we setup as a platform to set the train on and we put the Christmas tree in the middle. I hope to perhaps one day have a house where I can have some space to build my own layout. I spent 20 years on active duty in the Coast Guard so not much time to be in one place. Then I got out right in the middle of the economic chaos. So I still have yet to find a house to build my dream.
