Continuing layout construction on my version of the Lionel Dealer Display D-105. This is a 5x9 two-level layout. The upper level is built so that it looks like it is sitting on an outcropping of rocks. There will also be a large mountain at one end that covers both levels.

Anyway, have been working with the paint colors for the "rocks" and really experimenting with technique and colors. After a few weeks I think I've captured something pretty close to the "Lionel look" found on these old displays. Will duplicate this for the mountain later.

Note: Am not trying to exactly duplicate the mountain construction techniques used by Lionel in the 50s. Decided to go with a modern version of cardboard, paper, and plaster cloth.

Looks like a great start. Are you planning on using "O" gauge track?

Yes, regular Lionel tin track (black ties). The layout will have a combination of about 20 operating accessories and various trackside signals and for the most part I have original PW versions. Collecting those has been as much fun as building the layout.

Biggest challenge has been trying to duplicate a PW-style layout surface. Using actual Lionel 919 grass sprinkled on wet paint. Through experimentation I think I've got that close to what the final look will be.
