Experimenting with several RR gauges can be a good idea if you're just getting started. Play with them awhile and give careful thought as to what you like/dislike about each gauge. Make notes. Check back with them from time to time. Don't buy too many of each and especially the high end equipment until you decide what direction you plan to go. Expensive items can be difficult to resell sometimes and you have the potential to lose more $$$.
Take your time, talk with other hobbyists and attend train shows if possible. Each gauge and scale has it's strong points and appeal. You are still young enough to experience vast changes in wants and likes in a relatively short period of time.
