This weekend was filled with Strasburg activity on the home layout. After painting 89's wheels to cover up their metal outer rims, and adding a bell pull cord, the locomotive is on its way to looking more like the prototype.
My experience with the derailment issue: Locomotive front driver wheels derail on fastrack switches (using 060 and 072) when both pulling and pushing a train. Running the locomotive moderately slow does not cause derailments. When the loco is ran pulling a train with the added front coupler, the driver wheels under the cab are the first to derail on the switches. Also the front pilot truck does derail on switches too......
