I just purchased a Lionel LW Transformer and it only runs while holding down the Direction button.
The throttle will adjust the speed but the direction button must be held down.
Tapping the direction button will reverse the engine direction and will run at the speed the throttle is engaged.
Any suggestions, as I am tired of holding down the direction button to run.

I have to say holding down the direction button is a new one. I can't even fathom a failure mode that would cause such behavior...
Olsens hosts the service documents for the LW with diagrams and such, but nothing that specifically calls out your experienced symptoms.
Sounds like a loose wiper arm to me.

The contact arm for the reverse button is in the wrong position. The arm that the push rod operates needs to be under the contact, not on top. Take a look under the fiber top plate. A pair of needle nose pliers will correct the problem.
