I wanted a way to off-load containers to a barge and back again. The Mi-Jack was too big and takes up a bit of real estate for the wheels. Not only is it not wireless you can't use it to off load outside of the Mi-Jack wheels. Enter the Lionel Moving Gantry Crane that is both wireless and can off-load beyond  its wheels.

So i purchased Ross' special Gantry track; shifted the spurs on either side; but the darn motor housing that controls the moving wheel sticks out into the side spur. WHY? Why not put the darn housing on the inside offset to clear the cars beneath while not affecting the spur lines on either side??

So with a little effort I removed the housing, removed the gear from the wheel shaft; cut a little notch in the inner leg and replaced the motor housing on the inside where it is not in the way.  See photos below.

Look Ma three tight lines about the crane.

It may be a little clearer from the top view

How about a view between the crane's legs see the inset housing and the small notch cut into the right crane leg. Note the notch is a bit higher than the housing to accommodate the wiring. The wires are fit into existing davits that are located on both sides of the crane leg. As if Lionel was originally thinking of a better placement but didn't.

another view between its legs.

closer view.

Does your gantry crane move well...like it is supposed to...along the Ross track?

I shelved mine as a "poor runner."

Using the special 5-rail track section from Gargraves or Ross will probably give the best performance and without any hassles--the self-propelled version of the crane was designed to move on this special track section.

In my case, I happened to have a couple extra pieces of regular Gargraves track, so I decided to save the money and make it work with the regular track--poor decision in retrospect. I had to tweak and tweak and tweak to get the track set up so that the crane would move well. The spacing and alignment in every plane had to be just so. But, once I finally got it right, the crane does move just fine.

One tip to make the crane move smoothly: put the end of your figure on the CAB thumbwheel and just keep spinning the wheel for as long as you want the crane to continue moving.

This is a wonderfully fun, interactive accessory!
