Back in 2010 I bought an ABA set of Lionel postwar scale F3's in NYC roadname. To be honest, the category postwar scale made little sense to me at the time and I certainly was not sure what I was going to get. I unpacked them and to my delight I thought they were beautiful. More than postwar, less than fully scale, but the total effect was great. Of course, I wanted a set of Legacy Lightning striped F3's. The ran well and eventually were relegated to shelf duty as other locos took their place on the layout.

Over the years, good friends have admired the set and have tried to track them down and they appear to be all but impossible to find. Are they really as scarce as they seem to be? One appeared on the Bay today and immediately disappeared.

In reference to the set Eliot mentioned on eBay yesterday they were listed sometime yesterday morning or afternoon Illinois time. By 5:44 pm NY time the seller ended the listing. He mentioned in the listing his willingness to deal offline with TCA and LOTS members. (Yes I know that violates the rules but that's what he did so let's leave it at that) At about 4:30 NY time I sent him a message that I'm a member of both and would like to deal. He replied fairly quickly with this "What is it with this set? I've already received a half a dozen inquires." I asked for a contact number, no reply.

When I got home I looked him up on the TCA site with the member number he provided in the listing and called him. I spoke with someone there who told me he was on his cell phone, as he has been most of the afternoon, so I left a message that I was calling about the NYC F3's and to please call me back.

By the time I went to bed I had not heard from him. I sent two additional messages  inquiring about them but so far no answer.

I presume today someone has themselves an ABA (powered B) set of NIB engines. The staring bid was $499.99 for the AA and $229.99 for the B. I have to imagine he had several interested buyers bidding for them. I can only presume they sold for way more than the opening bids.

As to Eliot's question, here's my two cents. They are a beautifully done set. They are nicely detailed in grey lightening stripe. They are the only grey Legacy lightening stripe F3's?set produced to date. NYC fans love their NYC and are not quick to part with them.

They are the first set I've seen up for sale in years.

Just my $.02.

I had the Santa Fe A-B-A units. They are Legacy and they are scale in all do respect except for the chrome horns. I never understood why they were called post war ? Maybe because of the paint?

Anyway, I would not call them rare, they are just heavily sought after. Just like the Vision line GE Evolution Hybrid. They are plenty of them out there, they just have a high demand.

And for a good reason too. They are beautiful in the lighter black/grey paint and with a quick change of the horns, they look very much like scale.

Thanks to all who contributed here. I previously thought that the post war cornucopia of NYC Lightning Striped F3's would be a primary reason Lionel did not want to continue churning out more even with Legacy. I can certainly understand the Warbonnet mania but, even so, it seems from the posts above that Warbonnet issues with Legacy are scarce.

Consdering the legion of Central fans and the desirability of Legacy units, the scarcity of the Lightning Striped Legacy F3's is curious. Has anyone seen prices for an AA or a powered B?
